Help. I am planning on creating a free standing deck with a pergola around a hot tub. my hot tub is 34" high. The deck will be completely wrapped around the hot tub. I was considering installng footings to the ground surface and then brackets for 6"X6" post. The post will serve as the framing for the deck and the post for the composit columns of the pergola. I am concerned that the post will not be strudy enough to hold the deck and the pergola's lintels, rafters and purlins. Any advise?

when marking for 16 on center using a stock that is 1 1/2" thick as shown in the video u should actually mark at 15 1/4 so that the center of the joist is at the actualy 16" :P o and it is also important to crown the joist witch would be determining the "curve" or "bow" in the wood and you want 2 make then face all the same way preferably with the crown up

Excellent job! You made building a deck very easy to understand and follow! A tip: Whenever I use ANY saw, I always check - Where is my left hand? Are my knees or any other body part near the path of this saw? When he was cutting the railings, I imagined a careless person could cut a piece of wood across the newly installed deck boards and leave a deep kerf in the wood. The cut made by a saw is called a kerf.

Great Videos (all 6). Heres a question: I have a patio covered with bricks layout. I've had the patio for about 10-12 years while living in a high-class neighborhood. Now, things in the house are started to fall apart so we are making more maintences in one time. Question: For the patio brick layout, the bricks have rise up greatly, so that its no longer matched up together. It seems to only rise in one line, and we have a wood base underneath the patio. Before giving advice on building a deck, how about a lesson on the materials. Like how that joist hanger must be a Z-max type, which is ACQ certified (of which also Home Depot doesn't sell!!!). Instead of a standard hanger that would fail in less then a year causing serious injury or even death!

Modern building nobody uses stair skirts anymore at least good builders, for one reason they can sheer off and nailing them off like they did will never hold after 6 months, bouncy stairs. Incorrect fastners to hold the joist hangers too. Man what a joke.

Dom you really did a great job with this video. You made it really easy to understand and covered parts that I couldn't find on other videos. You did a better job than Tom Silva on Ask This Old House. I don't think he covered the top or bottom cuts and didn't explain it as well.
